Nothing inside is worth meeting whoever forced the door. 2. ****Report it and photograph it The police report (denuncia) is what your insurer will ask for. Photograph the door, the lock and anything disturbed before touching them. 3. ****Make the door lock again The same day. A new cylinder, a reinforced keep or a temporary bolt: whatever it takes to leave the home closed tonight. 4. ****Record the damage for the insurer A written description of what was found and what was done, with photographs, to go with the police report. 5. ****Then decide on the upgrade Calmly, a few days later, with the insurer's answer in hand. ## High security locks and a stronger door A security upgrade does not have to mean a new door. Most forced entries go through the weakest point, and on most flat doors that is the cylinder or the frame, not the leaf. - ****High security cylinders Resistant to snapping, bumping, drilling and picking, with a protected key profile. - ****Armoured escutcheons A hardened plate over the cylinder so it cannot be gripped or twisted out. - ****Reinforced keeps and frames So the bolts have something solid to lock into when the frame is where the door gave way. - ****Extra locking points An additional lock high or low on the door, for flats that stand empty for weeks. - ****Balcony and terrace doors The way in on low floors more often than people expect. Counting shops and other premises, the total was 68, against 80. In the same period, 811 thefts were recorded. For a city with this many people passing through, burglaries are rare, and falling. That is not much comfort if yours is one of them, but it does mean the upgrade should be proportionate: a good cylinder and a solid frame, not a fortress. Call the police first and ask whether they want to see the door as it is. Once they have, or once they tell you they will not come, the door can be secured. Your photographs do the rest for the insurer. ### What will the insurance company want from the locksmith? Usually a written description of the damage found and the work done, with photographs, to go alongside the police report. Ask for it when the job is booked so it is prepared on the visit. ### The door frame is split. Can it still be locked tonight? Usually yes, as a temporary measure: the frame is reinforced or a surface bolt is fitted so the flat can be closed. The permanent repair to the frame or the door comes afterwards. ### They got in through the balcony, not the front door. Then the balcony door is the priority.
