The city
Why a door in Benidorm is its own kind of job
In 2025 Benidorm received 3,058,623 visitors and recorded more than sixteen million overnight stays, according to the city's tourism office. A population of 77,221 on the register can pass 365,000 in a summer. That is a great many keys changing hands, and a great many of them going missing.
The city also grew upwards: more than thirty of its buildings are taller than 100 metres. So the usual call here is not a garden gate. It is a flat on a high floor with a concierge downstairs, a room in a hotel that never closes, or a door onto a balcony that has stopped latching.
And the season never really ends. Hotels keep most of their beds open from October to March, when the winter residents arrive. The phone is answered in January exactly as it is in August.

Five things people ask before they ring
Will I be able to explain the problem in English?
Yes. Calls, WhatsApp messages and the work itself are handled in English or Spanish, whichever you are more comfortable with. If a building concierge or a hotel receptionist needs to be spoken to in Spanish, that is part of the job.
Can you make me a spare key, or a new key for my car?
No. This business does not touch keys at all: none of the following is offered — cutting or copying keys, of any kind; spare or replacement keys for doors and padlocks; car keys: supplying, replacing or programming them; transponder keys and vehicle remotes; ignition and ignition barrel repairs; keys for motorbikes and vans. With cars, the only work is opening a door that has locked with the keys inside.
I am in a tower with thirty floors. How will you find the right door?
Send the name of the building, the street its entrance is on, the block or staircase letter, the floor and the door. A WhatsApp location pin helps with the first two. If the street door needs a card or a concierge to let anyone in, say so on the phone.
How do I pay?
By cash, card or Bizum, once the work is done. The price is agreed on the phone before anyone sets off.
If I ring at four in the morning, does somebody answer?
Yes, the line is answered at any hour, every day, and lockouts, door openings and cars are attended at night. Being reachable is not the same as being round the corner, though: you are told honestly how long it will take for your address before you agree to anything.
