Safes

A safe that has stopped taking the code

Passports, cash, the paperwork for the flat, all behind a keypad that has gone quiet. Most safes that refuse to open have a simple reason, and very few need to be cut apart.

  • Apartments, offices, hotels
  • Proof of ownership every time
  • Intact routes tried first

Guests first

In a hotel room? Start at reception

With 11.6 million hotel nights in Benidorm in 2025, the room safe is the one most people meet. It belongs to the hotel, the hotel holds its override, and reception can usually open it quickly. We are called when the hotel's own procedure fails, and then it is the hotel that books us. Hotels can read how that works on the page for hotels.

In a holiday apartment or your own home, there is no reception, and that is where we come in directly.

Causes

Four reasons a safe stops opening

  • A code nobody remembers

A flat bought with the safe already in it, or a winter let where the last tenant set it. In a city where homes change hands and guests so often, it is not a rare call.

  • Batteries that died over the summer

A flat closed for months, a safe that was fine when you left. The lock is intact; it has no power.

  • Bolts that bind

The code is accepted, the motor whirrs, the door does not move. Something is pushing on the door or the bolts.

  • A lock that has failed

Mechanical or electronic, worn out or damaged. Replaceable, once the safe is open.

Proof

The one job where nobody's word is enough

A safe holds what its owner least wants anyone else to have. So proof is asked for on every single job: the deeds or the rental contract for a home, the lease or a director's authorisation for business premises, the manager's written instruction for a holiday flat. When the proof is inside the safe, the safe is opened in front of the owner and the document checked on the spot.

Shops and offices with a safe in the back room often need other lock work at the same visit; that is covered on the page for businesses. To describe your safe, send a photo of its front, with the make and model if visible, through the contact page.

Asked on the phone

Safe questions we hear most

It is the safe in my hotel room. Should I call you?

No, call reception. Hotel room safes have a master override held by the hotel, and staff can usually open one in minutes. If the hotel's own procedure fails, the hotel calls us, not the guest.

The keypad is completely dead.

Most often flat batteries. Many safes have an external battery contact or a hidden compartment for exactly this; the manual or a photo of the safe tells us which. If the electronics themselves have failed, the safe is opened another way.

The code is accepted but the door will not move.

That is usually the bolts binding, not the lock refusing: something inside is pressing against the door, or the safe has shifted. Hitting the handle harder makes it worse. Leave it and describe it to us.

We bought the apartment and nobody knows the code of the safe.

Common with flats that have changed hands. With proof that the property is yours, the safe is opened and either reset to a new code or fitted with a new lock.

Will the safe be ruined?

Not if it can be avoided. The routes that leave the safe intact are always tried first. Where drilling is the only way, it is done at a point that allows the lock to be replaced and the safe to be used again, and you are told before it starts.

A safe keeping you from your own things?

Send a photograph of the front, with the make and model if you can see them. Many safes can be identified before anyone comes out.
