Read enough apartment listings in Benidorm and you will see puerta blindada in almost all of them. It sounds reassuring, and translation tools render it as “armoured door”. It is worth knowing what it actually means, because the real protection is somewhere else.
Blindada: a reinforced door
A puerta blindada is usually a wooden door with a steel sheet or steel reinforcement inside it, heavier hinges, and a lock that throws bolts at more than one point. It is a real improvement on a plain wooden door, and it is the standard front door in Spanish apartment blocks.
What it is not is a steel door. The frame is often an ordinary frame, and the door is only as strong as the lock and the frame it closes into.
Acorazada: a steel door
A puerta acorazada is a different thing: a steel structure, often a steel frame anchored into the wall, many locking points, and considerable weight. It is found in some newer or higher-end flats, and in homes where the owner chose to fit one.
How to tell which you have
- Weight. Swing it gently. A blindada is heavy for a wooden door; an acorazada is noticeably heavier than that.
- The frame. A steel frame, fixed deep into the wall, points to acorazada. A wooden frame with a metal strip does not.
- The edge. Open the door and look at the edge: how many bolts come out when you turn the key, and at which heights.
- Paperwork. If the door was fitted by a previous owner, the invoice or a label on the edge may name the maker and model.
Why the cylinder matters more than the word
Whichever the door is, you open it with a key, and that key turns a cylinder. If the cylinder is basic, it can be snapped, bumped or drilled faster than any steel sheet can be cut, and the door is only as good as that part. A door sold as blindada with a cheap cylinder is often weaker than an ordinary door with a good one.
So the useful questions are:
- What cylinder does the door have? A brand and model are usually stamped on its face.
- Is it protected? An armoured escutcheon, the hardened plate around it, stops it being gripped.
- Does the frame hold? Bolts are only as strong as what they lock into.
If you are locked out of one
