Benidorm’s hotels recorded 11.6 million overnight stays in 2025, and a great many of those rooms have a small electronic safe in the wardrobe. Most of the time it works. When it does not, it is usually at the worst moment: early in the morning, bags packed, passports inside.
First: ring reception, not a locksmith
A hotel room safe belongs to the hotel, and the hotel has a way in. Most room safes have a master code or an override key held by management, and staff can usually open one quickly. Even if you are in a hurry, ringing a locksmith first is slower, not faster: a locksmith needs the hotel’s permission to touch its property, and will ask reception anyway.
In an apartment or a holiday flat, the same logic applies to the host or manager: they may know the master code, or have the manual.
Why the safe has stopped opening
- The batteries have run down. The most common cause. The keypad goes dim or dead. Many safes have a way to power them from outside for exactly this.
- A wrong code entered too many times. Many safes lock out for a while after several wrong attempts. Waiting for the lockout to finish, then entering the code slowly, often works.
- The code was set by mistake. A finger slipped when you set it. Staff can override it.
- Something is pressing on the door. A bag or a bottle wedged against the inside stops the bolts retracting, even with the right code. The keypad beeps, the handle will not turn.
Leave the handle alone
Do not hit the handle, pull on the door or try to prise it. Force on the bolts makes them bind harder and can turn a two-minute override into a drilled lock. Describe the symptoms instead: does the display light up, does it beep, does anything whirr?
When a locksmith is called
Only when the hotel’s own route fails: the override is lost, the electronics have died completely, or the bolts are jammed. Then the hotel books the job, stays present, and the safe is opened in a way that allows it to be repaired and used again. Before your next stay
Use a code you will not forget and that is not your birthday, and keep a photo of the passport page on your phone. It does not open the safe, but it makes the morning of a stuck safe a great deal calmer.
